Carisoprodol Overview
Generic Name: Carisoprodol
Drug Class: Skeletal muscle relaxants
Dosage Forms: Tablets (250 mg, 350 mg, 500 mg, 750 mg)
Uses
Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxant that works by blocking pain signals between the nerves and the brain. It is commonly used in combination with rest, physical therapy, and other treatments to relieve pain and discomfort associated with acute musculoskeletal conditions such as muscle spasms, strains, and injuries. Due to its potential for dependency, Carisoprodol is typically prescribed for short-term use, generally 2 to 3 weeks.
Mechanism of Action
Carisoprodol is metabolized in the body to meprobamate, a substance with anxiolytic and sedative properties. The exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is believed to work by interrupting neuronal communication within the reticular formation and spinal cord, resulting in muscle relaxation and relief from pain.
